Frequently Asked Questions

Not sure where to start? These are some of the most common questions we hear from patients — no jargon, just honest answers.

 getting started

  • We provide hearing care exclusively for adults, including comprehensive hearing evaluations, hearing aid consultations and fittings, reprogramming for existing hearing aids, and ongoing support.

  • If you’re unsure, start with your primary care doctor — they can handle issues like ear infections and guide you if a referral is needed. See an ENT for recurrent or persistent problems, sudden hearing loss, or impacted earwax. See an audiologist for hearing tests, hearing aids, & ongoing hearing care.

  • Maybe — but not always. We begin with a hearing test and a conversation about your lifestyle and goals. If hearing aids are recommended, we’ll explain why and walk you through your options at your own pace.

insurance & pricing

  • We are in-network with Aetna, Cigna, CareFirst BCBS, United Healthcare, and Medicare. While most plans cover hearing tests, hearing aid coverage varies by plan and is not guaranteed. Some offer partial benefits, but many patients should expect hearing aids to be an out-of-pocket expense. We’re happy to help verify your benefits, and we also encourage patients to confirm coverage directly with their insurer.

  • Unfortunately, most insurance plans do not fully cover hearing aids. Some may offer partial reimbursement, but it’s rare. Hearing aids are generally considered an out-of-pocket expense.  Our billing team is happy to help check your benefits in advance.

  • We understand hearing aids are an investment. Our goal is always to help you hear better, and we do our best to offer options that make sense for your hearing needs and your budget. Prices generally start at $3,500 per pair.

  • The cost includes more than just the device — it also covers professional fitting, cleanings, follow-ups, and ongoing support. We bundle everything together to keep things simple and predictable, with no surprise fees later on.

hearing aids & technology

  • We work with most major hearing aid manufacturers, including Oticon, Phonak, Signia, Starkey, and Widex.

  • It depends — your hearing, lifestyle, and personal preferences all play a role. We’ll help guide you to the right fit.

  • Most modern hearing aids are small, discreet, and rechargeable. We’ll show you different styles and help you find something that feels comfortable.

  • Most last about 5 years, depending on how they’re used and maintained.

  • Sometimes. For some people, hearing aids can reduce the perception of tinnitus by providing more sound input and distracting from the ringing. But it’s not a guarantee — everyone’s experience with tinnitus is different. The primary goal of hearing aids is to support better communication, and any tinnitus relief is an added (and sometimes welcome) benefit.

care, adjustments, & support

  • Possibly — it depends on the brand and software. If compatible, we’re happy to help. Programming is a $200/hour patient fee, charged in 15-minute increments.

  • That’s a common reaction at first. Hearing aids amplify sounds — including background noise — so your brain needs time to adjust. We can fine-tune the settings and help you ease into the transition, but keep in mind hearing aids will pick up some degree of background noise.

choosing yu audiology

  • Retail chains can offer lower prices but may limit your options or time with a provider. At Yu Audiology, you’ll get personalized attention, longer appointments, and a consistent relationship with a licensed audiologist who knows you — not just your test results.

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids are designed for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. They're self-fit and don’t include professional support. If you’re not sure what’s right for you, we’re happy to help you figure it out.
